A Quick Winter Project for Beginning Knitters
One of the favorite pieces of winter attire is my wimple.
They are very easy to knit if you choose to knit it in the round with all knit stitches and big yarn. It doesn’t take long at all. You can use any size yarn. Adjust it for how it fits your head and make sure it is large enough to take on and off.
Begin by casting on the number of stitches you need to make a hat. With a yarn that is 5 stitches to the inch, cast on 96 stitches. Circular needles are the easiest and this knits all in the round. Knit two inches of knit 1, purl 1 for ribbing, then knit 18 inches in the just the knit stitch, follow with two more inches of ribbing and you are done.
Spin-Off Winter 1990 p. 17 has three pretty examples. You probably can find these issues in your local Spinning and Weaving Guild library. These are 20” around and 18” long. One is made from California Variegated Mutant Wool, one silk and camel down, and one qiviut and silk. These beautiful head coverings are great for town trips. Your head is completely covered so there is no worry about what your hair looks like and they don’t fall off or blow off. Mine are this same size as these except I make the end that is around my neck a couple of inches bigger. For men, I make them 2” to 4” longer.
The last one I made was for my brother in Mackay who starts his day at 3 a.m. checking the weather report. Whether its new snow or blown snow he clears the city streets before everyone else leaves to go to work. A cold job. For his wimple, I used a smaller yarn and knitted cable stitches for most of the length as I wanted some bulk.
Wimples for outdoor chores are best when they fit under your coat collar and and then tube over your head and allow you to flex it over your face depending on the outdoor temperature. When we are out in the middle of the night, I really don’t want contact with anymore cold air than necessary to breathe. I have never cared for baklavas and like these much better. Pat
